New Jeep SUV based on Tata Sierra set for 2028 Launch

Quick Read - The upcoming Jeep SUV could get 4x4 capability, while Tata is also exploring a Sierra 4x4. The J1J project will use the Sierra's ARGOS architecture, with a range-extender EV under consideration and exports planned for left-hand-drive markets.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Stellantis have reportedly signed a formal agreement to develop a new Jeep mid-size SUV based on the Tata Sierra's ARGOS platform. Internally codenamed J1J, the SUV is expected to launch in the first half of 2028 with ICE and electric powertrain options.

Launch and production

Production is likely to take place at the Fiat India Automobiles joint-venture plant in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra, rather than Tata's Sierra manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. Manufacturing operations are expected to be adapted for the programme over the next 18 months.

A dedicated development team based in Pune is reportedly working on the project, including a left-hand-drive version for overseas markets.

How it will differ from the Sierra

The Jeep will get its own exterior design, upper body, cabin and seating package while sharing the underlying ARGOS architecture and components with the Sierra. Tata Motors will retain ownership of the platform and license it to Stellantis.

The two SUVs are expected to share powertrains, although structural reinforcements may be required to meet crash-safety and overseas regulatory requirements. Stellantis is also benchmarking the Jeep Renegade and Compass during development. The production SUV's name and final design are yet to be decided.

4x4 potential and export plans

A four-wheel-drive version of the Jeep is considered likely, as ARGOS can accommodate a 4x4 ICE drivetrain. The partnership could also accelerate the development of a 4x4 version of the Sierra. Engineers are exploring a range-extender electric vehicle application, but no production decision has been made.

The agreement expands a partnership spanning more than two decades, which has involved manufacturing, powertrains and supply chains. Tata could benefit from platform licensing and shared component volumes, while Stellantis could reduce development costs and add a new Jeep to its portfolio.

Stellantis aims to sell 100,000 locally produced vehicles globally in 2028 across its Tata and Dongfeng partnership programmes combined. The specific export markets for the new Jeep have not been established.
