For buyers looking for a rugged luxury SUV that handles both off-road trails and city streets with equal finesse, the newly launched Mercedes-Benz G450d and Land Rover Defender 110 Diesel Trophy Edition are two standout options in India.

Exterior

The G450d stays true to the G-Class’s legendary silhouette. Its square-jawed design has been refined rather than overhauled, featuring a new grille with four horizontal chrome slats, subtly redesigned front and rear bumpers, and 20-inch AMG alloy wheels that add a sporty yet understated touch.

While less aggressive than the AMG G63, the G450d projects a premium, urban-luxury vibe. Off-road capabilities are impressive, with 241 millimeters ground clearance, a 700 millimeter water fording depth, and approach, breakover, and departure angles of 31 degrees, 26 degrees, and 30 degrees. This makes it capable on varied Indian terrains, from Himalayan trails to monsoon-soaked streets.

The Defender 110 Diesel Trophy Edition emphasizes rugged adventure, inspired by historic Camel Trophy rallies. It offers exclusive paint options such as Deep Sandglow Yellow or Keswick Green, contrasted with black roofs, bonnets, scuff plates, and wheel arches.

Trophy decals on the bonnet and C-pillar highlight its special-edition status, while 20-inch gloss black wheels with all-terrain or all-season tires enhance its aggressive stance. Practical accessories include a heavy-duty roof rack, deployable side ladder, side panniers, and a snorkel, giving it a ready-for-expedition personality. While both SUVs command attention, the G450d leans toward refined urban luxury, whereas the Defender projects rugged, rally-inspired energy.

The exposed dashboard crossbeam matches the exterior paint and features laser-etched Trophy endcaps. Land Rover’s Pivi Pro infotainment ensures tech convenience, and durable, easy-to-clean surfaces with modular storage cater to adventure enthusiasts. Its five-door layout provides ample space, though it prioritizes utility over plushness. The G450d emphasizes refined luxury, whereas the Defender focuses on expedition-ready practicality.

Engine and Performance

The G450d is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine with a 48 volt mild-hybrid system, delivering 367 horsepower and 750 NM of torque. Power is transmitted via a nine-speed automatic to all four wheels, enabling 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 210 kilometers per hour. The mild-hybrid system enhances efficiency and provides extra punch for overtaking, making the SUV agile for its size, whether on highways or trails.

The Defender Trophy Edition uses a 3.0-liter inline-six twin-turbo diesel with mild-hybrid assistance, producing 350 horsepower and 700 NM,  Its eight-speed automatic and standard four-wheel-drive system achieve 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 6.4 seconds, with a top speed of 191 kilometers per hour. Designed for torque-heavy off-road performance, it features Terrain Response modes for mud, sand, and rocks. The G450d edges out in acceleration and highway speed, while the Defender is more versatile in extreme terrain.

Mileage

Neither SUV is designed for fuel efficiency, though mild-hybrid technology helps. The G450d averages around 9 to 10 kilometers per liter in real-world Indian conditions, while the Defender Trophy Edition manages 11 to 12 kilometers per liter according to ARAI certification, thanks to lighter weight and improved aerodynamics. Off-road use will reduce mileage for both. For long drives, the Defender may require fewer fuel stops.

Price

Pricing reflects positioning and exclusivity. The G450d starts at 2.9 crore rupees ex-showroom, with only 50 units available in the initial launch. The Defender Trophy Edition is more accessible at 1.3 crore rupees ex-showroom, offering a special-edition SUV with numerous adventure-oriented accessories. On-road costs in major cities will push both higher due to taxes.
