Rankings
In September 2025, car market buzzed with excitement as the festive season and GST 2.0 tax relief ignited a surge in demand for SUVs and eco-friendly vehicles, reshaping the competitive landscape.
Maruti Suzuki led the pack with 132820 domestic units sold, down 8% from last year, but bolstered by a robust total of 189665 units including exports. Tata Motors stole the spotlight, racing to an all-time high with 59667 to 60907 domestic units, a remarkable 47% jump, driven by strong SUV and electric vehicle sales.
Mahindra & Mahindra secured a solid performance with 56233 domestic utility vehicles, up 10%, contributing to a total of 100298 units, fueled by popular models like Scorpio-N and XUV700. Hyundai Motor India, despite a 10% rise in total sales to 70347 units, including exports, saw domestic sales of 51547 units, reflecting struggles in smaller segments but strength in SUVs.
Retail registrations from the Vahan portal showed Maruti at 122278 (up from last year), Tata at 40594 (up 28%), Mahindra at 37015, and Hyundai at 35443 (down from last year). The difference between wholesale and retail suggests dealers stocked up for the festive rush. Other brands shone too: Toyota (31091 units, up 16%), Kia (22700 units, up 16% from August), JSW MG Motor (6728 units, up 34%), Nissan (10500 total units, up 9.3%), and Honda (8096 units, down 26%).

Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki held the crown despite an 8% dip in domestic sales, as entry-level cars and SUVs faced softer demand. Exports soared to a record 42204 units, and festive deliveries crossed 1.65 lakh units in Navratri's first week. Popular models like the Swift and Baleno (66882 units) helped Maruti maintain its lead.
Tata Motors
Tata Motors clinched second place, with its best-ever sales. The Nexon SUV led the charge with over 22500 units - a record for any Tata model. Electric vehicle sales nearly doubled to 9191 units, and CNG models crossed 17800. The Harrier and Safari also hit new highs, reflecting demand for Tata’s SUVs and EVs.
Mahindra & Mahindra
Mahindra grabbed the third spot with 56233 SUV sales, up 10%, thanks to crowd-pleasers like Scorpio-N, XUV700, and Thar. Festive retail jumped 60% during Navratri's early days, though supply hiccups slowed late-month deliveries. Exports grew 43% to 4320 units, showing global love for Mahindra’s SUVs.
Hyundai
Hyundai slipped to fourth with 51547 domestic units, struggling in smaller car segments. SUVs were the bright spot, making up 72.4% of sales. Unsurprisingly, the Creta set a record with 18861 units, and the Venue hit a 20-month high of 11484. Exports jumped 44% to 18800.
With the festive season still in top gear, sales are expected to rise further in October, especially for SUVs and electric cars. Tata and Mahindra are ready to shine, while Hyundai might need a fresh game plan.
