Maruti suzuki Grand Vitara Engine and Transmission Explained
Currently, the Vitara is offered in there distinct engines A basic mild hybrid petrol, a string hybrid petrol and a recently introduced CNG unit mated to either manual/automatic, FWD or AWD.
Do Note that strong hybrid is a clunky 3 cylinder as opposed to smooth driving 4 cylinder in both CNG and mild hybrid engines. Interestingly, the CNG offers near similar performance figures to it petrol only cousin with just 3 PS difference. The hybrid here offers more power and torque but does come with a 50 kg weight penalty and reduced boot space.
For the 1.5L Mild-hybrid Petrol engine coupled with a 6-speed Torque Converter (TC) automatic transmission, customers can choose from seven distinct variants: Sigma, Delta, Zeta, Zeta+, Alpha, Alpha+, and Nexa.
If preferring a more budget focused approach with better driving engagement , the 1.5L Mild-hybrid Petrol engine paired with a 5-speed Manual Transmission (MT) is available in Sigma, Delta, Zeta, Alpha. For those who want to skip the leg day in heavy traffic, the 1.5L Petrol Hybrid engine with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) comes in 3 variants: Delta+, Zeta+, Alpha+,
Finally, for the most economical running costs, the 1.5L CNG engine with a 5-speed Manual Transmission (MT) is offered in two practical variants: Delta and Zeta.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Rivals
The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, priced from ₹11.42 lakh to ₹20.68 lakh, faces stiff competition in the midsize SUV segment, with its closest rival being the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, a rebadged twin sharing its platform, powertrains, and class-leading strong-hybrid efficiency of 27.97 kmpl in city driving.
Multiple reviews praise the strong-hybrid’s real-world mileage, often exceeding 25 kmpl, a feat unmatched by direct rivals, making it a standout for urban commuters. Competitors like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, MG Astor, Honda Elevate, and Tata Nexon offer distinct styling and engine options, including turbo-petrol (Creta, Seltos, Kushaq) and diesel (Creta), but none match the Grand Vitara’s hybrid fuel economy or CNG variants (26.60 km/kg). T
The Creta and Seltos boast larger boot spaces (433 liters vs. 265 liters in strong-hybrid Vitara) and advanced features like ADAS, appealing to tech-savvy buyers seeking dynamic performance. However, Maruti’s unparalleled dealership and service network, with over 4,000 touch points across India, ensures unmatched reliability and low maintenance costs, a key driver behind the Grand Vitara’s 3 lakh sales in 32 months.
The AllGrip AWD in Alpha variants adds light off-road capability, rare in this segment. From my perspective, the Grand Vitara’s 34 Models spanning mild-hybrid, strong-hybrid, and CNG offer unmatched versatility, catering to budget buyers (Sigma) and luxury seekers (Alpha Plus) alike.
Choose the Grand Vitara for its fuel efficiency, extensive variant options, and Maruti’s service reliability, especially if city driving and low running costs are priorities. Alternatively, opt for the Creta or Seltos for more powerful engines, larger cabins, or premium interiors, or the Kushaq for sports car like driving dynamics.
