Maruti Suzuki EV SUV Spied Testing

A mysterious Maruti Suzuki EV-looking SUV was spotted recently in Haryana. The lack of any visible exhaust system is a good indication that it is an all-electric vehicle and a super brand-new one, not a retrofitted or existing model converted into an EV like the Punch or Nexon.

The vehicle is incredibly massive inside and out. Since whoever filmed it was quite far away, it is impossible to speculate what it is, but we are pretty sure that it is not anything small, evident from when the man in the video tried to put the tarpaulin back in place.

This yet undisclosed EV was spotted by Carindianews in Haryana, where Maruti Suzuki's plant is based. Reports suggest it could be a part of Maruti’s Project YMC. I think it is something destined for overseas markets and may be launched in India.

We will keep speculation to a minimum and based on what we can gather after watching the video above multiple times, here’s what we know:

  • It’s a Maruti EV
  • It’s a brand-new platform, not an existing one
  • It’s incredibly large and wide
  • It is still undergoing initial testing

This is the fourth Maruti Suzuki spotted testing in the last couple of months. Earlier, we reported that the Baleno facelift, Fronx facelift, and the Brezza facelift were also spotted. The latter was seen with an underbody CNG tank, while the Fronx was spotted by our teammate Arjun with hybrid badges slapped on it and no camouflage.

Judging by the urgency of the whole scenario, I think Maruti is preparing a massive new armada of cars to be released in the next six months. They even discontinued the Ignis recently to free up some assembly lines for the upcoming Y43 compact SUV.

The best and largest-selling carmaker in India has been on the back foot for a while as their EV portfolio is pretty much non-existent and their money-making small car segment is on the decline.

On top of all this, The current fuel price increase and the Prime Minister’s whole “don’t drive, save fuel” situation is surely not doing them any favours.

Going by the number of test mules we have spotted recently, it looks like Maruti is finally buckling up and preparing an aggressive wave of EVs, Hybrid and SUVs to stay relevant in the increasingly cutthroat compact and mid-size SUV market.
