How to Get Your Vehicle's RC Extended

Do you own an old vehicle that is nearing its Registration Certificate (RC) expiry date? No need to worry. Renewing your RC, often called "extending" it, is a simple process that keeps your car or bike legally roadworthy in India. Think of your RC as your vehicle's ID card - letting it lapse could lead to fines or even your ride getting impounded. 

This guide will walk you through the latest steps in an easy way.

Why RC Renewal is Necessary 

Your vehicle’s RC is not permanent. For private cars and two-wheelers, it is valid for 15 years from the date of registration, after which it has to be renewed every five years, provided your vehicle passes a roadworthiness test. Commercial vehicles follow similar rules, but might need fitness certificates from the start. Renewing keeps you compliant with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and skipping it could lead to penalties. 

For those with cherished 15+ year-old classics like a Chevrolet Cruze, Maruti Kizashi, or Ford Fiesta, renewing your RC can breathe new life into these machines. These vehicles often hold sentimental value or serve as practical daily drivers, especially in smaller towns where newer cars might not be as affordable.

 With proper maintenance and a successful renewal, you can keep them rolling safely for years, avoiding the higher costs and hassle of replacing them with modern alternatives.

You can start the renewal process up to 60 days before expiry to stay ahead. In 2025, fees for older vehicles (over 20 years) have increased to nudge owners towards scrapping or upgrading, but the core process remains unchanged.

Eligibility to Apply

If your RC is about to expire, you’re eligible to renew. This applies to private vehicles like cars, bikes, and light motor vehicles (LMVs). While it is applicable for commercial vehicles too, they often bundle renewal with fitness certificates.

You will need to clear any pending road tax, emissions tests, and insurance. For vehicles over 15 years old, expect a stricter inspection to ensure they’re still safe to drive.

Documents Checklist

Nobody likes last-minute document hunts, so here’s what you need. Scan them for online submission or bring originals for offline. Items marked with asterisks (*) vary by state, so check locally.

• Form 25: The renewal application (available online).
• Current RC Book: Your existing RC.
• Valid PUC Certificate: Shows your vehicle meets emission standards (get a new one if it’s over a year old).
• Insurance Certificate*: At least third-party coverage.
• Road Tax Proof*: Receipt proving it’s paid.
• Fitness Certificate*: Required for commercial or very old vehicles.
• Chassis and Engine Pencil Prints*: Ink impressions for verification.
• ID Proof: PAN, Aadhaar, or Form 60/61 if no PAN.
• Photos and Signatures: 2-3 passport-sized photos and specimen signatures.

For electric vehicles or imports, include type approval certificates. Always carry your driving license too.

Online RC Renewal - The Fastest Way

Most people prefer the online route through the Parivahan Sewa portal, as it is quick and skips long RTO lines. 

1. Log In or Sign Up: Head to the Parivahan portal and select "Vehicle Related Services." Enter your vehicle’s registration number, chassis number, and your mobile number for OTP verification. New user? Register with your Aadhaar or driving license.
    
2. Pick the Service: Choose "Renewal of Registration" from the menu. Confirm with "Yes" on the pop-up.
    
3. Complete the Form: Your vehicle details auto-fill. Download Form 25 - the renewal application, fill it out, and upload it with the other required documents.
    
4. Pay the Fees: The portal calculates fees, including any road tax due. Pay via net banking, card, or UPI. Save the receipt.
    
5. Book an Inspection Slot: Schedule a vehicle check at your RTO. Most states offer slots within a few days.
    
6. Inspection Day: Drive to the RTO on your booked date. They’ll check brakes, lights, emissions, and chassis condition. If you pass, you’re nearly done.
    
7. Get Your New RC: Approval takes 7-15 days. Download the updated smart card RC from the portal or wait for it to arrive by post.

RC Renewal through RTO

If you are not familiar with tech and not confident with the online route, you can still get it renewed at your local RTO. 

1. Get Form 25: Download it from the Parivahan site or grab a copy at the RTO.
    
2. Visit the RTO: Carry all necessary documents and submit them with the form and fees.
    
3. Vehicle Inspection: Officials may either inspect on the spot or schedule a slot.
    
4. Pay and Wait: Clear any dues, pay the fees, and collect your renewed RC after approval (7-15 days).
    

RC Renewal Cost

Costs may vary depending on your vehicle type, state, and age. Here’s a 2025 estimate for standard vehicles.

Add ₹100-300 for inspection and road tax (5-15% of your vehicle’s invoice value annually). Online payments might include a small convenience fee, but they save time.

Expired RC Penalties 

Driving with an expired RC can slap you with a ₹5,000 fine for the first offence, along with possible vehicle seizure. Late renewal fees include ₹300 per month for cars and bikes, with higher penalties of up to ₹500/month in states like Karnataka.

Apply within 60 days after expiry to keep penalties low. If your RC has expired for over 15 years, re-registration is tougher and will involve extra scrutiny.

• Check Early: Use the mParivahan app to scan your RC and set expiry reminders.
• Clear Pending Dues: Settle any unpaid taxes or fines via the portal to avoid rejections.
• Prep for Inspection: Get your vehicle serviced beforehand, especially the exhaust and brakes, to pass the PUC and fitness tests.
• Know Your State’s Rules: Places like Delhi or Maharashtra might require an e-challan clearance.
• Update Insurance: Inform your insurer about the renewal within 30 days.
