Hyundai Bayon: What to Expect from Hyundai's Upcoming Compact Crossover?

Hyundai is planning to introduce a new compact crossover in India to compete in the crowded sub-4 meter segment.

This new model will be based on the Hyundai Bayon, which was introduced in global markets in 2021. With this model, Hyundai aims to bridge the gap between the Exter and Venue in its lineup. It has been spotted testing abroad, with an India launch expected in the second half of 2026.

While the global-spec Bayon is more of a low-slung crossover, spy shots reveal the India-bound Bayon having a boxy shape with an SUV stance, similar to the Venue and Exter. It includes split LED headlights with slim daytime running lights at the top. The front has a bold grille, while the sides show thick cladding and alloy wheels. At the back, connected LED taillights add a fresh touch. It will be under 4 metres in length to avail tax benefits.

While the spyshots did not reveal any interior details and features, expect a premium-looking dashboard with a fairly feature-loaded cabin. Safety might cover Level 2 driver aids like automatic braking and lane assist, along with all disc brakes.

The Indian-spec Bayon is likely to debut with an all-new 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine for performance seekers. This engine is expected to replace Hyundai's existing 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine across its model lineup. A 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine could be standard for the entry-level variants. Transmission choices could include a manual and automatic, with a possible DCT for the turbo petrol variants. A CNG variant could also be on offer for cost-conscious buyers.

Hyundai aims to launch this SUV around the 2026 festive season, with prices expected to range from ₹7 lakh and going up to ₹13 lakh (ex-showroom), slotting it between the Exter and Venue. The Hyundai Bayon will rival other compact crossovers like the Maruti Fronx, Toyota Taisor, Tata Punch, Citroen C3, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger.
