Exterior

The Tata Punch Smart base model carries the same tough, upright SUV design that defines the Punch range. Tata has not diluted the exterior identity for the entry variant, which means the Smart still looks like a proper micro SUV rather than a raised hatchback. The front features Powersight LED headlamps paired with slim LED daytime running lights, giving the car a modern and confident face. The high bonnet line, upright grille and thick black cladding on the bumper reinforce the Punch’s rugged character.

In terms of size, the Punch strikes a strong balance between compact dimensions and usable road presence. It measures 3,876 mm in length, 1,742 mm in width, and 1,615 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,445 mm. These proportions help the Punch remain easy to drive in the city while still offering a stable stance and good interior space.

The boot capacity stands at 366 litres, which is generous for this segment and practical for daily use or weekend travel. CNG models have a lower boot capacity of 210L

One of the Punch’s biggest strengths is its ability to handle bad roads. The Smart variant offers a ground clearance of 193 mm, allowing it to clear broken roads, tall speed breakers and uneven surfaces without scraping.

It also has a water wading capability of up to 400 mm, making it suitable for heavy monsoon conditions. Approach, ramp over and departure angles of 21.4 degrees, 21.6 degrees and 39.4 degrees respectively give the Punch genuine rough road confidence.

The Smart base model runs on 15-inch steel wheels fitted with 195/60 R16 tubeless radial tyres.

Interior

Inside the Tata Punch Smart, the focus is clearly on practicality, durability and ease of use. The cabin layout is simple and functional, designed to withstand daily wear and tear. The dashboard design is clean, with all controls placed within easy reach. A digital instrument cluster comes as standard and displays speed, fuel level, trip data and warning indicators clearly, making it easy to read even while driving in traffic.

The Smart trim includes essential convenience features such as keyless entry, central locking, front power window, and a corporate steering wheel that feels sturdy in hand. Manual air conditioning is standard and performs adequately for city and highway driving. T

ata also includes City and Eco drive modes, allowing drivers to switch between better throttle response or improved fuel efficiency depending on driving conditions. The Idle Start Stop system helps reduce fuel consumption during long traffic stops.

Seating comfort is decent for everyday use, with fabric upholstery and front adjustable headrests included. The upright seating position and tall roofline ensure good headroom for both front and rear passengers. Rear seat space is sufficient for two adults comfortably, with three possible for short trips. Storage options include door pockets, bottle holders and a usable glovebox, making the cabin family friendly.

You do not get touchscreen infotainment, rear AC vents or premium trims in the Smart variant, but the interior feels honest and well put together. It delivers what most buyers actually need on a daily basis without unnecessary distractions.

Engine and Powertrain

The Tata Punch Smart base model is powered by Tata’s proven 1.2 litre Revotron naturally aspirated petrol engine. This three cylinder engine produces around 88 PS of power and 115 Nm of torque, which is well suited for city driving and relaxed highway cruising. The engine is tuned for smoothness and fuel efficiency rather than outright performance, making it easy to drive for new and experienced drivers alike.

The petrol engine is paired with a 5 speed manual transmission as standard. The gearbox is light and user friendly, which helps reduce fatigue in stop and go traffic. Gear ratios are tuned for urban conditions, ensuring decent low speed drivability and smooth progress in daily use.

For buyers looking to lower running costs, the Punch Smart is also available with a factory fitted 1.2 litre iCNG option. In CNG mode, the engine produces around 73.5 PS and 103 Nm of torque.

The Smart variant does not get the new turbo petrol engine or automatic gearbox options. Those are reserved for higher trims.

Safety

Safety is one area where the Tata Punch Smart stands out strongly. Even as the base variant, it comes equipped with six airbags, offering protection for both front and rear occupants. Tata has also announced a 5 star child and adult BNCAP rating

The Smart variant also includes Electronic Stability Program, Hill Hold Assist, and Anti lock Braking System with electronic brakeforce distribution. These systems help maintain control during sudden braking, slippery road conditions and uphill starts. A tyre pressure monitoring system is also included, alerting the driver if tyre pressure drops below safe levels.

For families, ISOFIX child seat mounts are provided, ensuring proper installation of child seats. All seats get three point seatbelts with seatbelt reminders, reinforcing safety for every occupant. Features like follow me home headlamps add convenience and safety when parking or walking away from the car at night.

Price

The Tata Punch Smart base model is priced aggressively to attract first time buyers and budget conscious SUV shoppers. The petrol manual version starts at ₹5.59 lakh ex showroom, while the CNG manual version is priced at ₹6.69 lakh ex showroom. This pricing places the Punch in the same range as premium hatchbacks while offering SUV like stance, higher ground clearance and stronger safety credentials.

Ownership costs remain reasonable thanks to simple mechanicals, efficient engines and Tata’s widespread service network. Insurance and maintenance expenses are also relatively low, making the Punch Smart an economical long term choice.

Why the Smart Base Model Makes Sense

Really you cannot ask much more of an super compact SUV with this kind of specs for 6 lakhs on road price. Same was true for previous version, it was excellent for what it offers and the sales number reflect the same story, The problem with Tata Punch or the brand in general is its after sales and service support, which hopefully has been fixed.

No other car offers what Punch has in terms of safety, it is very hard to nitpick the problems in Tata punch except a bit of an NVH issue here and there in the last gen which hopefully has been fixed by now, we will review it soon, so stay tuned.
