Why Have Petrol and Diesel Prices Gone Up?
The government and oil firms cited mounting losses as the main reason for the hike. Oil marketing companies had been absorbing heavy under-recoveries of around Rs 1,000 crore per day due to high global crude oil prices.
Brent crude has surged above $105 per barrel amid the ongoing Middle East conflict and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. India imports most of its oil, and these global pressures, along with a weaker rupee, made it unsustainable to keep retail prices frozen.
This marks the first major retail fuel price adjustment in nearly four years. Prices had remained largely unchanged since 2022, with only a small reduction of Rs 2 per litre in March 2024 before the Lok Sabha elections.
Further increases could follow if global oil prices stay high. Check local rates in your city, as they vary by state taxes and location.
