Petrol-powered two-wheeler sales in India remained robust in the opening months of 2026, with the segment led by established players focused on commuter motorcycles and scooters. Hero MotoCorp Ltd topped the chart with 4,92,388 units in January, followed by a steady 4,57,508 units in February, reflecting its continued dominance in the entry-level commuter space driven by models like the Splendor Plus (consistently the highest-selling bike overall, moving over 3 lakh units in January alone) and HF Deluxe

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (P) Ltd came close behind with 4,73,712 units in January and 4,30,906 in February; the Activa scooter led as the top-selling scooter (around 2.7 lakh units in January), while the Shine 125 reinforced Honda's strength in the 125cc commuter category.

TVS Motor Company Ltd posted 3,65,112 units in January and 3,33,810 in February, supported by strong performers like the Jupiter scooter and Raider/Apache series in the premium commuter and sporty segments.

Bajaj Auto Ltd recorded 1,96,187 units in January and 1,80,813 in February, with the Pulsar range maintaining appeal among younger buyers. Royal Enfield (Eicher) saw 1,07,788 units in January dropping to 91,159 in February, led by the Classic 350 as a key volume driver in the mid-size premium motorcycle space.

Electric two-wheeler sales showed mixed trends in early 2026, with legacy brands gaining ground while some startups faced challenges. Ather Energy Ltd led the pure EV pack with 22,081 units in January and 20,580 in February, driven by the 450X and Rizta models appreciated for build quality, software features, and expanding charging network.

Greaves Electric Mobility Pvt Ltd (Ampere brand) sold 5,341 units in January and 4,724 in February, benefiting from affordable options in the family and commuter EV space. Ola Electric Technologies Pvt Ltd recorded 7,531 units in January but dropped sharply to 3,968 in February, impacted by ongoing service network concerns that eroded buyer confidence despite past popularity of models like the S1 series.

River Mobility Pvt Ltd posted 2,612 units in January and 2,255 in February with its flagship electric motorcycle gaining niche traction for performance and design. Other players like Revolt (651 units in February), Oben Electric (up slightly to 380), Komaki, and Ultraviolette showed smaller volumes, often in specialized segments. The segment as a whole reflected a broader shift toward trusted brands with better after-sales support, even as total EV adoption continued to grow steadily amid infrastructure improvements.

Two-wheeler sales across both petrol and electric segments declined in February 2026 compared to January, with most manufacturers reporting 5-15% drops (and sharper falls for some like Ola Electric at 47% and Royal Enfield at 15%).

January benefited from a strong carryover effect from late-2025 festive season demand, improved rural cash flows after good harvests, wedding-season purchases, and early-year promotions that encouraged buyers to complete transactions before potential policy shifts. February, with only 28 days, naturally had fewer selling days, leading to lower overall volumes.
