Bajaj Is Adding 2 More Chetaks in 6 Months, and an Electric Motorcycle Is Coming

Bajaj Auto just had its Annual General Meeting on July 21, 2026, and in the post-results media round, Joint Managing Director (JMD) Rakesh Sharma confirmed 2 things that matter more than any quarterly number: 2 new Chetak variants are arriving before the year ends, and Bajaj is actively building an electric motorcycle.

Neither announcement came with a reveal date, a price, or a name. But given that Sharma is now JMD and this was a formal post-results interaction with the press, these are not rumours or speculation. They are on record.

What Sharma Actually Said About the New Chetaks

The Chetak range currently runs 5 models, from the 2501 series at the entry end to the 3501 series at the top. Sharma described the 2 upcoming additions as "interesting products that open new market segments," which rules out minor spec shuffles. These are not face-lifted variants of something that already exists.

He also clarified the brand structure: Bajaj is not launching a second EV scooter brand. Chetak works as an umbrella, and all new models will sit under it. About 80% of Chetak sales happen through 550 exclusive Chetak stores, so the retail infrastructure to absorb 2 new models is already in place.

Bajaj is currently selling 40,000 to 50,000 Chetaks per month. At 24% of the scooter market now being electric, this pace has made Bajaj the number 2 electric scooter brand in India. The new models are clearly aimed at building on that position without giving it away on margins.

Bajaj Electric Motorcycle Launch Timeline and Plans

When asked whether an electric Pulsar was off the table, Sharma said,

“We are working on electric motorcycles as well.”

In a recent investors call, Chief Financial Officer Dinesh Thapar, talking to ET Auto, said, 

“Electric motorcycles are clearly under development and, all things going well, should start to see some launch happening sometime in FY28. Development work is already well underway, and we are beginning to see a clear timeline for when the product will hit the market.”

The electric motorcycle is expected to be a practical and affordable commuter model that offers performance similar to a 150cc petrol bike, with low running costs and good everyday usability.

The bike will first be introduced in international markets, with a focus on export countries, before it comes to India. Bajaj is strong in regions like Africa and Latin America.

A successful export launch could also prepare the ground for a strong entry in the Indian market later.

What This Means If You Are Buying a Chetak Now

If you are actively considering a Chetak, the next six months will see two new entry points arrive. If the existing five models already cover your budget and range needs, there is no reason to wait. If you are on the fence about range or price tier, it is worth holding on to see what the new models bring. 

Sharma said that these new models 

"open new market segments" 

This suggests at least one of them will go below the current entry price or above the current flagship range.

EVs now make up 24% of scooter sales in India. Bajaj's electric division has already turned profitable. 

The new models are being added from a position of strength, not as attempts to break into the market. That usually means better-specced launches, not desperation discounts.
