Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the India-spec CLA Electric as its new entry point into the luxury EV segment, replacing models like the A-Class Limousine, EQA, and EQB in one go. The car will launch in April 2026, with bookings starting March 10, 2026. It is offered in a single well-equipped CLA 250+ rear-wheel-drive variant powered by an 85 kWh battery and a single rear motor producing 272 hp. T

he new MMA platform brings an 800-volt electrical architecture, India-specific suspension tuning with raised ground clearance, and advanced driver assistance systems calibrated for local conditions. Expected pricing is in the Rs 55-60 lakh range (ex-showroom), making it a compelling premium electric sedan for buyers seeking long range, fast charging, and Mercedes luxury in a compact, stylish package.

engine and performance

The India-spec CLA Electric uses an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with an 800-volt architecture. It is powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 272 hp and 335 Nm of torque. The rear-wheel-drive setup delivers quick acceleration (0-100 kmph in 6.7 seconds) and efficient power delivery.

The battery is designed for longevity and fast charging, supporting up to 240-320 kW DC fast charging capability depending on the charger. This combination ensures strong performance, smooth power delivery, and excellent thermal management for consistent real-world use in Indian conditions.

Range and Charging

Mercedes claims a WLTP range of up to 792 km for the CLA 250+ variant with the 85 kWh battery. Real-world range in Indian conditions is expected to be 500-600 km depending on driving style, weather, and load. The 800-volt architecture allows very fast charging — 10-80% in approximately 22 minutes using a high-power DC fast charger (up to 240 kW or more).

It can add significant range quickly, making long trips practical. Home AC charging is also supported for overnight top-ups. The combination of long range and rapid charging makes the CLA Electric highly usable for both daily driving and occasional highway journeys.

interior

The interior of the CLA Electric features a minimalist, high-tech cabin with the latest MBUX hyperscreen system, including a large central touchscreen and a digital driver display. Materials are premium with soft-touch surfaces, ambient lighting, and high-quality leatherette upholstery.

The cabin is spacious for four adults with good rear legroom and headroom despite the coupe-like roofline. Infotainment is powered by the latest MBUX system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, voice commands, and over-the-air update capability. Practical features include multiple USB-C ports, wireless charging, and a panoramic sunroof option in higher configurations. The overall layout is driver-focused, quiet, and luxurious, making it feel like a true Mercedes even as an entry-level EV sedan.

exterior

The CLA Electric adopts a sleek, aerodynamic four-door coupe silhouette with a low drag coefficient of 0.21 for maximum efficiency. The front features the signature Mercedes grille with illuminated logo, slim LED headlights, and a smooth bumper design. Side profile highlights flush door handles, a fastback roofline, and elegant proportions that give it a premium, sporty stance.

At the rear, connected LED taillights and a clean diffuser complete the modern look. The car rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and comes with protective cladding and India-specific suspension tuning for better ground clearance. Overall, it looks elegant, futuristic, and distinctly Mercedes while maintaining excellent aerodynamics for the claimed long range.

safety

Safety is a strong point with multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and a reinforced structure designed to meet high global safety standards. The CLA Electric comes equipped with Level 2 ADAS features including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring, all calibrated specifically for Indian driving conditions.

A 360-degree camera and tyre pressure monitoring system add everyday convenience and safety. The rigid MMA platform with high-strength steel and the low centre of gravity from the floor-mounted battery enhance stability and crash protection, giving buyers confidence in a premium electric sedan built for real-world Indian roads.

competition

The CLA Electric will compete in the premium electric sedan space against the BMW i4, which offers similar performance and driving dynamics.

The Mercedes EQE is a larger, more luxurious option within the same brand, while the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 6 or BYD Seal could challenge it on value and range. In India, it also indirectly competes with the Mercedes EQA/EQB (which it replaces) and higher-end EVs like the EQE. Its blend of luxury, long WLTP range, and compact size gives it a unique positioning as an accessible entry into Mercedes electric motoring.
