Volkswagen Golf GTI vs Skoda Octavia RS

The Skoda Octavia RS, limited to 100 units and sold out in under 20 minutes, joins the Volkswagen Golf GTI, launched earlier this year, in India’s SUV-heavy market. Both share the MQB Evo platform and aim to deliver turbocharged thrills in compact, premium formats. The Octavia RS starts at ₹49.99 lakh ex-showroom, while the Golf GTI is priced around ₹50.91 lakh. Both are imports with minor omissions compared to European versions.

Exterior

The Octavia RS has a refined liftback silhouette, measuring 4689 mm in length with a 2686 mm wheelbase. Its front end features a blacked-out grille with RS badging, matrix LED headlights, and sporty bumpers. The 19-inch anthracite wheels and subtle rear spoiler complete its poised stance. Ground clearance sits at 128 mm, requiring care on uneven roads.

The Golf GTI takes a more compact, hot-hatch approach. It is 4284 mm long with a 2636 mm wheelbase. Its honeycomb grille with a red line, IQ.Light LED headlamps, and roof spoiler give it a bold presence. Sitting on 18-inch Richmond alloys with 132 mm ground clearance, it is slightly better suited for city roads.

Interior

The Golf GTI focuses on the driver. Its cockpit-style interior has tartan-patterned seats, red accents, and ambient lighting. The panoramic sunroof brightens the cabin, but rear space is tight and the boot is only 380 litres. Seat adjustments are manual, emphasising a sport-focused experience.

Engine and Performance

Both cars use a 2.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine producing 265 PS and 370 Nm, paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic driving the front wheels. The Octavia RS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h, feeling composed with linear torque delivery.

The Golf GTI has a slightly lighter body, allowing a 0–100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds. Its exhaust note is sharper, and acceleration feels quicker in city scenarios. Claimed mileage is slightly lower for the GTI, averaging 9–11 km/l, compared with 12–14 km/l for the Octavia RS.

Handling and Ride

The Octavia RS uses a fixed sports suspension tuned 15 mm lower than the standard model. Progressive steering and an electronic differential lock provide stable cornering and confident braking. Ride quality can feel harsh over uneven Indian roads.

The Golf GTI also skips adaptive dampers for India but uses a stiffer suspension with an XDS+ differential, giving sharper handling and reduced body roll. It feels lively in quick corners and is more playful on backroads, while the Octavia is more stable on highways.

Pricing

The Skoda Octavia RS is priced at ₹49.99 lakh ex-showroom, making it slightly more affordable than the Volkswagen Golf GTI, which is listed around ₹50.91 lakh ex-showroom. Being fully imported units, both cars carry premium pricing compared with locally assembled sedans and hatchbacks.

The Octavia RS offers more space and equipment for a marginally lower cost, while the Golf GTI leverages its iconic badge and sporty hot-hatch appeal. Buyers should also factor in on-road costs, which can push the Octavia RS to around ₹55–58 lakh and the GTI to ₹56–60 lakh depending on the city.

Both come with a four-year/1 lakh km warranty and complimentary roadside assistance, but maintenance and spare parts could be costlier due to their import status.
