Tesla Model Y L Launched At ₹61.99 Lakhs With Third Row And Dual Motor AWD

Tesla's new Model Y L gives the lineup a new life, with changes that feel meaningful for Indian buyers looking for a higher end flavour. With this release, it now competes with the likes of larger electrics such as the Kia EV9, the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 7 and Mercedes EQB.

This new variant brings larger propertions, a revised exterior, with some debatably small improvements to the interior tech. However, the main catch is the new dual-motor AWD and an addition of a third row, which is a major step-up from the single-motor RWD and two-row configuration in the Model Y.

Here's everything you need to know about changes that the new Model Y L brings to the table:

Tesla Model Y L Exterior & Design

Form the outside, the Model Y L's design remains easy to mistake from its smaller sibing, a missed opportunity for bringing some distinctness to the lineup, depending on the taste. The body is now 186 mm longer to 4,969 mm, 44mm taller to 1,668mm, and rides on a wheelbase that has grown by 150 mm to 3,040 mm. Meanwhile, the width changes to 1,982mm (with mirrors folded).

There is a trade off worth flagging, though, is that the ground clearance has been trimmed by 45 mm to 122mm, which is noticeably lower than the 167 mm on the Model Y. This is a non-issue on smooth roads, but the car will require a more kinder approach to unmarked potholes that appear without warning on Indian roads.

Change is mostly noticable in the extended roofline, at the rear which gets a revised spoiler, and a sliver of additional quarter glass. Meanwhile, the body rides on the unchanged 19-inch size wheels, which now gets Machina 2.0 alloy design, a departure from the older Crossflow, including removable aero covers.

None of these changes scream for attention, which seems entirely deliberate on Tesla's part.

Tesla Model Y L Interior Seating & Tech

The entire justification for this car's existence is in its cabin seating, as it replaces the 5-seat two-row configuration with an additional row, removing the middle seat entirely at the center and shifting it at the rear.

The first row now gets thigh extension, while the second row retains heating function as before, but with new two-way power folding and retractable armrests, which seems bare minimum for an additional row upgrade over the bench that older Model Y buyers have been living with.

For the third row, Tesla has provided occupants dedicated AC vents that are mounted on C-pillars, including USB Type-C charging ports, cupholders, and a 50:50 split-fold feature, all expected additions.

Space wise, the Model Y L looks cramped compared to a properly designed 6 or 7 seater MPV, like the Innova Crysta. Even with the extended wheelbase and the addition of a third row, the space is best suited for children or occasional adults, assuming they aren't tall.

This can be attributed to the sloping rear design that will place passengers close to the rear glass.

On the upside, the total boot space is generous, which now upgrades to 2,539 litres from 2,130 on the standard Model Y, while the frunk holding 116 litres.

Tech wise, the Model Y L's dashboard gets modest change at best, which feels rather unexciting, except for one notable detail - Tesla has doubled the number of speakers, from 9 to 18, with an additional subwoofer.

While this seems impressive on paper, the value in this dramatic increase in speaker count would be debatable for some buyers.

Tesla Model Y L Battery, Motor, Range & Charging

The standard Model Y was offered in India in rear-wheel-drive form, while the Model Y L is exclusively dual-motor AWD. Also, the 85 kWh battery pack adds over a hundred km of claimed range from the standard Model Y, to 681 km and acheives up to 288 km from a 15 minutes supercharge, which is a much needed improvement over the Model Y.

The new variant also achieves a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 201 km/h.

Charging-wise, Tesla has finally introduced Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability on the Model Y L, being a little late to adopt the technology, allowing the car to power external devices and appliances using its battery via a dedicated adapter.

Several electrics from brands such as Hyundai, Kia and BYD have offered V2L support for years, including their models already sold in India.

Comfort-wise, the multi-link suspension is now paired with continuously variable damping, allowing the system to adjust shock absorber stiffness in real time.

Drivers can also choose between two modes - Balanced for everyday driving, and Rear Comfort, which softens the rear suspension to improve ride quality for passengers in the back.

Lastly, tyre sizing is staggered, with 255/45R19 wheels at the front and slightly wider 275/45R19 wheels at the rear, which hints at a setup that is tuned for stability under the heavier load it will now be carrying.

The Model Y L is priced at Rs. 61.99 lakh (ex-showroom), available in seven different colours - Stealth Grey, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Quicksilver, and Ultra Red.
