Over 4.02 Lakhs Passenger Cars Were Sold In May 2026 As Per FADA

Passenger vehicle retail in May 2026 was 4,02,591 units, down from 4,28,734 in April but up 23% from 3,26,656 in May 2025.
The month-on-month drop is expected. April is typically the strongest month in the first half as dealers push hard to close numbers, and May sees a natural pullback. The year-on-year jump of over 75,000 units is the real story.
Maruti Suzuki topped the sales chart again, with the Brezza, WagonR, and Swift likely its three highest-volume models. They also made a record by selling 1 lakh units of Victoris and 5 lakh units of Fronx recently.
Hyundai's Creta continues to be the best-selling mid-size SUV, and Tata's Nexon and Punch together give the brand strong numbers in the compact SUV space.
Mahindra had a strong run through early 2026 with the Scorpio-N and XUV 3XO, and that likely continued into May.
If retail holds around 4 lakh units a month through the rest of the year, 2026 total PV retail could comfortably reach 47 to 48 lakh units, which would be a record.
