Next Golf R Might Have An Inline 5

Volkswagen is preparing a landmark farewell for the Golf R with a 25th anniversary edition scheduled for 2027, as per Autocar UK . The performance hatchback will adopt Audi’s 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine from the RS3, making it the most powerful Golf R ever built.

The current Golf R 333 is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that produces 328 hp and 400 Nm. With the RS3’s engine, output will jump to about 394 to 401 hp and as much as 500 Nm of torque. This upgrade is expected to bring the 0 to 100 kph time down from 4.6 seconds to under 4.0 seconds. In comparison, the RS3 achieves the sprint in a claimed 3.8 seconds.

To manage this extra performance, Volkswagen is likely to recalibrate the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and integrate Audi’s torque-splitting rear differential for improved traction and sharper handling. Reinforced chassis components, revised suspension geometry and larger brakes are also expected to keep the car balanced and track ready.

The exterior will feature a more aggressive stance. Spy shots reveal new bonnet vents, larger bumper intakes, a bigger roof spoiler, a redesigned rear diffuser and quad titanium exhausts with active flaps. Forged alloy wheels wrapped in semi-slick Bridgestone Potenza Race tyres will further emphasise its performance character. Weight is set to rise slightly by about 25 kg, but structural tweaks should maintain agility.

Inside, the Golf R will get lightweight bucket seats and other weight-saving measures to keep the cabin true to its motorsport-inspired role.

This edition is not only the fastest Golf R ever but also a symbolic farewell to pure petrol power before the model range shifts to electrification. The first fully electric Golf is expected to arrive before the end of the decade, making this special edition a high-revving curtain call for enthusiasts.

Set to be revealed in 2027, the five-cylinder Golf R will be the sharpest and most thrilling version in the hot hatch’s history.
