E85 Fuel Rolls Out in Mumbai at Rs 91.18 Per Litre

Mumbai motorists have a new fuel option with the launch of E85, a blend containing 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent petrol.

Priced at Rs 91.18 per litre, it is nearly Rs 20 cheaper than regular petrol in the city, which sells for around Rs 111 per litre.

This high-ethanol fuel is part of India's push to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, support farmers, and promote cleaner burning options. It is currently available at select public sector outlets and is meant only for flex-fuel vehicles designed to run on such blends.

As of now, there are limited flex fuel vehicles available in the market, including the Wagon R Bioflex which is E100 compatible, and a few bikes.

While the lower pump price offers some savings, the actual cost per kilometre depends on the efficiency loss.

E85 has lower energy content than regular petrol. Multiple reports based on tests running on both fuels, have stated a significant mileage drop of 20 to 30 per cent on E85.

In Mumbai, E85 is Rs 9 per litre more expensive than in Delhi. This makes it even lesser sense for buyers in the city compared to the national capital.

Those with compatible vehicles may want to calculate their specific running costs before switching.
