Mahindra & Mahindra absolutely dominated with a whopping 48,494 diesel units in January, slipping to 40,084 in February (a -17.34% MoM dip) still miles ahead of everyone else. Their lineup of rugged, no-nonsense vehicles like the Scorpio N, Scorpio Classic, XUV700, Bolero, and Thar did the heavy lifting, powered by Mahindra’s trusty mHawk 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engines.
These are proper workhorse motors that deliver up to around 172 hp and a massive 400 Nm of low-end torque, giving that effortless “pull you out of anything” feel, great highway manners, and real-world mileage in the 15-17 kmpl range.
Hyundai took second spot from 13,808 to 9,745 units (-29.42%). The Creta Diesel, Venue Diesel, Alcazar Diesel, and Verna Diesel are the crowd favourites here; their refined 1.5-litre CRDi engines (around 115 hp and 250 Nm) are smooth, quiet, and perfect for mixed city-highway use with mileage often touching 19-21 kmpl.
Tata Motors stayed solid in third with 8,447 to 7,268 units (-13.95%), led by the Nexon Diesel (compact and safe), plus the bigger Harrier and Safari all running Tata’s 1.5-litre or 2.0-litre Revotorq diesels that give punchy 110-170 hp and 260-350 Nm torque for confident overtakes and loads of character

Toyota held steady-ish at 4,910 to 4,357 (-11.26%), with the Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux proving why the brand’s 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre GD-series diesels are legends bulletproof reliability, 150-200+ hp, and torque figures up to 500 Nm that make long family trips or highway cruising feel effortless (mileage often 13-16 kmpl but they simply refuse to wear out).
The luxury bunch operates in smaller numbers.
BMW dropped from 446 to 254 (-43%), Stellantis from 282 to 169 (-40%), JLR from 168 to 83 (-50.6%), and MG from 124 to 50 (-59.7%), with models like the Jeep Compass, MG Hector, Range Rover Sport/Defender and Citroën C5 Aircross using sophisticated 2.0-litre diesels (170+ hp, 350+ Nm) tuned for refinement.
Mercedes-Benz was the only bright spot, inching up from 71 to 74 units (+4.23%) thanks to their super-smooth C-Class, GLE and GLS diesels with advanced 2.0/3.0-litre engines, mild-hybrid tech, and that premium torque delivery.

Diesel cars are still very much alive and kicking in India in 2026, even as petrol, CNG, hybrids and EVs grab more headlines. For anyone who clocks 15,000–25,000+ km a year (think highway runs, family trips, or even taxi/business use), nothing beats the combo of lower fuel cost per km, that strong low-end torque for effortless overtaking and climbing, and legendary long-term durability many of these engines easily cross 2-3 lakh km with basic care.
