The Volkswagen Polo was a well-known hatchback in India for a long time. It stayed on sale in the country for 12 years before production finally ended in 2022. The car was manufactured at the company plant located in Chakan, Maharashtra. During its entire stay in the Indian market, around 3 lakh units were sold. Many buyers liked the car for its solid build and powerful engine options. However, it faced very tough competition from newer cars as time passed. Sales began to drop because the model was getting old. Volkswagen eventually moved its focus to newer models like the Taigun and Virtus. These newer vehicles are built on a special platform designed for India. Even today, the Volkswagen Polo remains a favorite choice for many people looking for a used car.

The Volkswagen Polo was a popular hatchback in India for 12 years. It was built at the Chakan plant in Maharashtra. The car sold about 3 lakh units during its time in the market. In 2022, the company stopped production of the car. This model faced tough competition and slow sales near the end. Now, the brand focuses on newer cars like the Virtus and Taigun.

engine and performance

The Volkswagen Polo came with several engine options during its time in India. For many years, it used a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.2-litre diesel engine. Later, a 1.5-litre diesel engine replaced the older one. This model was very popular for its 1.2-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, which made 105 horsepower. This engine was joined with a fast 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. In its last years, the car moved to a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine. This small but strong engine made 110 horsepower and 175 Nm of torque. It worked with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. There was also a basic 1.0-litre MPI petrol engine for city use that made 76 horsepower. The car was well-liked for being fun to drive because of these quick engines. Drivers liked the smooth gear changes and the good power on the highway.

interior

The Volkswagen Polo had a very simple and clean cabin design. The dashboard used dark colors and felt very strong. Inside, the car had a basic layout that stayed the same for almost 12 years. It came with a small touchscreen in the later models. This screen worked with mobile phones easily. There were 5 seats in total, but the back area felt quite tight for tall passengers. The legroom in the rear was less than what many other cars offered at that time. However, the seats were comfortable for long drives. The driver got a clear view of the road from the seat. This model also had features like cruise control and rain-sensing wipers in the top variants. Many people liked the solid feel of the doors and the buttons inside. It was a practical space for small families.

exterior

The Volkswagen Polo had a simple and clean look that did not change much for 12 years. This car was known for its solid build quality and straight body lines. The car came with clear headlamps and a small front grille with the brand logo. It used 15-inch or 16-inch alloy wheels depending on the version. At the back, this model had square-shaped tail lamps and a clean tailgate design. Over the years, the company added small updates like turn indicators on the side mirrors and heat-shield glass. The paint quality was very good and felt thick to the touch. Many buyers liked the car because it looked good even after many years on the road. The door handles and mirrors often matched the body color. It was a compact car that was very easy to park in tight city spaces.

competition

The Volkswagen Polo faced many strong competitors during its 12 years in India. Its main rivals were the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai i20. Both these cars sold in much higher numbers than this model. Other cars like the Tata Altroz and Honda Jazz also competed in the same category. The Maruti Baleno was very popular because of its high fuel efficiency and low service costs. The Hyundai i20 offered many modern features that attracted young buyers. Toyota also sold the Glanza as a direct rival to this car. Many buyers chose these other cars because they had more interior space and better back seat comfort. While the Volkswagen Polo was famous for its strong build, it could not beat the high sales figures of its rivals. In total, only about 3 lakh units were sold over its long production period in the country.
