After the legendary YZF R15, Yamaha is all set to release its new entry level sports motorcycle, the YZF R2, in India next month. It is expected to debut on August 27.
The YZF R2 will be the higher-performance option compared to the longstanding YZF R15. Although the company has not disclosed any technical details, the R2 will come with a larger-displacement engine that significantly enhances performance compared to the R15. The R15 generates 18.4 bhp and 14.5 Nm. The R2 is expected to produce close to 25 bhp and 19 Nm.
In addition to the larger engine, the R2 is also anticipated to provide a more extensive equipment lineup. The R15 comes well-equipped, with premium variants featuring a TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity and a bi-directional quickshifter. The R2 should include all this, while adding adjustable ride modes, ABS settings, and possibly cruise control too.

The motorcycle will probably come with a hardware setup similar to the R15, though the state of tune will be different to support the bigger engine and enhanced performance. These might involve adjustments to the chassis setup, suspension calibration, and braking parts.
Given the R15’s significant popularity, Yamaha will probably continue selling the R15 along with the new R2.
The Yamaha YZF R2 is anticipated to be priced between Rs 2 lakhs and 2.30 lakhs (ex-showroom). Post its release, it will mainly compete with the KTM RC 200, Hero Karizma XMR 210, and Suzuki Gixxer SF 250.
