Two-wheeler retail in May 2026 was 18,44,947 units, down 7.19% from April's 19,87,881 but up 7.54% from May 2025's 17,15,581. The month-on-month dip is seasonal. May is typically soft due to summer heat in northern India reducing walk-ins, and April itself was elevated by financial year-end pushes at dealerships.

The year-on-year growth is what matters, and 7.54% on a base of over 17 lakh units is solid. Hero MotoCorp's Splendor remains the highest-selling individual model in the country by a wide margin, likely clocking 3 to 4 lakh units on its own in May.

Honda Activa leads the scooter segment and consistently ranks among the top three vehicles overall. Meanwhile, Bajaj's Pulsar range drives its numbers in the 150cc and above space, while TVS Apache and Jupiter contribute meaningfully to TVS's total.

The two-wheeler market's health is closely linked to rural income, and the numbers suggest that is holding steady.

A good monsoon through June to September would give the segment a strong second half, and full-year retail above 2.2 crore units looks achievable.
