The BMW i5 LWB is a long-wheelbase executive electric sedan launched in September at BMW's Chennai plant, making it the brand's first locally produced electric sedan in India and only the second locally manufactured EV overall after the X1 LWB.

It is offered in a single variant, the i5 eDrive35L M Sport, with the rear-mounted electric motor producing 268 hp and 410 Nm, drawing from an 81.6 kWh high-voltage battery with a claimed MIDC range of 669 km. DC fast charging at up to 160 kW allows a 10 to 80 percent charge in 33 minutes. A BMW Wallbox charger with installation is included as standard.

At 5,175 mm long with a 3,105 mm wheelbase, the i5 LWB is the largest sedan in its segment. The rear cabin is built around exclusive comfort seating with enhanced cushioning, a 31-degree optimised torso angle, a foldable centre armrest with two cupholders and wireless charging, and four-zone automatic air conditioning.

The cabin carries the BMW Curved Display combining a 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.9-inch control screen, a Bowers and Wilkins 17-speaker 655W sound system, CraftedClarity crystal glass controls, and a Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof with LED-based ambient lighting.

A limited First Edition, distinguished by Carbon Black paint with Titanium Bronze accents, BMW Individual Silver Bronze interior trim, Fineline open-pored fine-wood, and a rear seat entertainment package with a tablet and holder, sold out its 99 units before the official launch event.

Battery and Motor

The i5 LWB uses a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 200 kW, or 268 hp, and 410 Nm of torque, mated to a single-speed transmission in a fully integrated eDrive unit. Drive goes exclusively to the rear wheels. BMW claims a 0 to 100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 195 km/h.

The high-voltage battery has a gross capacity of 81.6 kWh. MIDC-certified range is 669 km. DC fast charging is supported at up to 160 kW, allowing a 10 to 80 percent charge in 33 minutes. AC charging via the included BMW Wallbox is supported at up to 11 kW. Adaptive Recuperation in D mode intelligently adjusts energy recovery based on traffic conditions, while B mode enables one-pedal driving with maximum regeneration.

Rear-axle air suspension is standard and has been specifically calibrated for Indian road conditions. Variable Sport Steering and BMW Performance Control, covering brake interventions during cornering, agility enhancement, and curve neutrality, are also standard.

Range and Charging

BMW claims a MIDC-certified range of 669 km on a full charge of the 81.6 kWh battery. DC fast charging from 10 to 80 percent takes 33 minutes at the maximum supported input of 160 kW. AC charging via the included 11 kW BMW Wallbox takes approximately 8 to 9 hours for a full charge from near empty.

interior

The BMW Curved Display dominates the dashboard, combining a 12.3-inch driver information display and a 14.9-inch central control touchscreen into a single seamlessly integrated unit, running BMW Operating System 8.5. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with voice and touch control, and over-the-air remote software upgrades. The illuminated BMW Interaction Bar stretches across the full width of the dashboard and into the door panels, integrating ambient lighting, AC controls, and flush air vents. CraftedClarity crystal glass elements are fitted on the iDrive controller, rotary volume control, and gear selector switch.

The front row features electrically adjustable comfort seats with active ventilation, lumbar support, electric backrest width and thigh support adjustment, and soft cushions on head restraints with electric height adjustment. The M Steering Wheel has a flattened bottom. Four-zone automatic air conditioning is standard, along with ambient lighting front and rear, wireless charging trays at the front and in the rear armrest, and multiple USB-C ports.

The rear cabin is a specific focus of the LWB. Exclusive comfort seating features sculpted seats with side bolsters, enhanced head restraint cushioning, a 31-degree optimised torso angle, and a foldable centre armrest with dual cupholders and wireless charging. The Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof features LED-based lighting patterns. A Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system with 17 loudspeakers, metal speaker trims in the doors, and 655 watts of system power delivers audio across the full cabin.

The First Edition adds a Travel and Comfort Package with a USB-C charging port and a high-quality tablet holder on the rear of the front seats. Floor mats are in velour throughout. An interior camera allows remote snapshot and video via the MyBMW app.

exterior

The i5 LWB measures 5,175 mm in length, 2,156 mm in width, and 1,520 mm in height, on a 3,105 mm wheelbase, the largest sedan in its class on all four dimensions.

The front is anchored by a prominently framed BMW kidney grille with Iconic Glow contour line lighting, which is active both at rest and while driving. Adaptive LED headlights with automatic cornering function, BMW Selective Beam for no-dazzle high beams, blue headlight elements, and a welcome light carpet on the ground beneath the doors complete the front. Pearl Chrome accents frame the radiator grille and run in the rear lights and bumper accents, while Aluminium Satinated trim covers the window surround, mirror base, mirror blade, and C-pillar panel.

Along the sides, flush-mounted door openers, black side skirts, a flowing shoulder line, and contoured rear wheel arches give the body a pulled-together stance. The newly interpreted Hofmeister kink is shallower and broader, with an embossed white '5' badge on the C-pillar. Electrical folding exterior mirrors are standard.

At the rear, slim L-shaped LED tail lights with a twin-light inner design emphasise the car's width. 20-inch M aerodynamic 939 M Bicolour alloy wheels are fitted, with a mixed-tyre configuration of 245/45 R20 at the front and wider 275/40 R20 at the rear for improved traction.

safety

No Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP crash test rating has been published for the BMW i5 LWB at the time of launch. The airbag count includes front airbags for driver and passenger, side airbags for driver and front passenger, front and rear head airbags, and a central airbag on the driver's seat,  providing comprehensive multi-zone coverage.

Standard driver assistance includes Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Driving Assistant Plus with Blind Spot Warning, rear crossing-traffic warning, rear collision prevention, exit warning, and lane change warning. Active Guard provides lane departure warning with active steering return, front collision warning with brake intervention, and left-turn warning with braking. Parking Assistant Professional includes a Surround View Camera, Reversing Assistant, Remote 3D View, and fully remote parking via smartphone.

ABS with Brake Assist and Dynamic Braking Lights, Dynamic Stability Control with Dynamic Traction Control and Cornering Brake Control, Post-Crash Collision Warning with braking function, Active Protection which pre-tensions seat belts in imminent accident situations, Active Park Distance Control at the rear, Attentiveness Assistant, electric parking brake with auto hold, TPMS, ISOFIX child seat mounting, and an emergency spare wheel are all standard.

competition

The i5 LWB's closest rivals in India are the Mercedes-Benz EQE LWB, the Audi A6 e-tron, and the BMW 5 Series LWB petrol.

The Mercedes-Benz EQE LWB offers a wider model range including both standard and AMG performance variants, a more mature EV platform globally, and Mercedes' Hyperscreen option for buyers who prioritise in-cabin display area. The i5 LWB counters with 669 km of MIDC-certified range, local production at Chennai which supports pricing discipline, and the Bowers and Wilkins 17-speaker system as standard, an audio upgrade the base EQE LWB does not match without options.

The Audi A6 e-tron brings a sleeker fastback silhouette and a more aerodynamically focused design with a better drag coefficient than both rivals. It also offers an AWD Quattro variant. The i5 LWB counters with rear-axle air suspension tuned for Indian conditions, a longer wheelbase at 3,105 mm versus the A6 e-tron's shorter body, and local assembly giving it a potential delivery and service infrastructure advantage.

The BMW 5 Series LWB petrol is the i5 LWB's own stablemate and a direct cross-shopping choice for buyers undecided on going fully electric. The petrol version benefits from longer highway refuelling infrastructure and no range anxiety. The i5 LWB counters with a 669 km MIDC claim, 33-minute DC fast charging, lower running costs per kilometre, and the Iconic Glow grille plus additional equipment that distinguishes it visually within the 5 Series family.
