The sub-4 metre SUV segment remained one of the most fiercely contested spaces in the Indian passenger vehicle market during May 2026, with the top three models separated by less than 1,600 units.
Maruti Suzuki's Fronx emerged as the segment leader, benefiting from its crossover styling, strong fuel efficiency and the availability of petrol, turbo-petrol and CNG powertrains.
Tata followed closely with the Punch and Nexon, both of which posted growth of over 45 percent, indicating sustained demand for SUVs that combine high safety ratings with competitive pricing.
One of the biggest gainers was the Hyundai Venue, which recorded the highest growth among the top six models at nearly 56 percent.

In contrast, established players such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Mahindra 3XO witnessed double-digit declines, suggesting buyers are increasingly gravitating towards newer or recently updated offerings.
The Kia Sonet continued to maintain healthy momentum despite intense competition, while the Hyundai Exter delivered steady growth in the entry-level SUV space.
Interestingly, badge-engineered products such as the Toyota Taisor were unable to match the pace of their Maruti counterparts, highlighting the strength of brand pull and product positioning in this highly competitive segment.
