Diesel's share in passenger vehicles dropped to 16.23% in May 2026 from 19.32% in May 2025. That is three percentage points gone in a year, and it is not coming back.

The main reason is straightforward: there are fewer diesel options worth buying under Rs 15 lakh, and buyers in that bracket have moved to CNG. CNG and LPG together now account for 23.34% of PV sales, up from 19.93% a year ago.

Maruti is the biggest driver here. Its S-CNG lineup, covering the WagonR, Ertiga, Dzire, and Brezza, gives buyers factory-fitted CNG at prices diesel variants cannot match on running costs. Hyundai's CNG versions of the Aura and Grand i10 Nios also add to this pool.

On the EV side, the 6.63% share is being led by Tata's Nexon EV and Punch EV, with MG Windsor and the new Mahindra BE 6 adding volume in the higher price bands.

Hybrids at 8.05% are almost entirely Toyota, with the Hyryder, Urban Cruiser, and Innova Hycross accounting for the bulk.

Petrol at 45.76% remains the largest share but has steadily lost ground as CNG alternatives become more accessible.
