The Tesla Model 3 is the entry-level sedan from the American electric vehicle manufacturer and is expected to be the brand’s first official launch in the Indian market. Positioned as a D-segment premium sedan, it measures approximately 4,720 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,440 mm in height, making it a direct competitor to luxury executive cars. The car is likely to arrive via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route initially, though Tesla may leverage the Indian government’s new EV policy which offers a reduced import duty of 15% for companies investing $500 million in local manufacturing. This positioning is crucial because it allows the Model 3 to bridge the gap between mass-market EVs and high-end luxury electric cars. The Indian version will likely be the updated "Highland" version, which features significant improvements in ride quality, cabin quietness, and aerodynamic efficiency. With a wheelbase of 2,875 mm, the car offers a spacious cabin for five passengers. It serves as a practical family car for urban buyers who want a mix of high-end technology and long-range capability. The Model 3 is expected to lead Tesla’s Indian lineup, offering a balance of performance and efficiency that targets buyers currently looking at the Mercedes-Benz C-Class or BMW 3 Series but wanting to switch to electric mobility.

Battery and Motor

The Tesla Model 3 is expected to be offered in two or three variants in India, focusing on different range and performance needs. The entry-level Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant is likely to feature a 60kWh LFP battery pack, providing a range of approximately 513 km on the WLTP cycle. This variant uses a single motor on the rear axle, producing around 245 bhp and 350 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 kmph sprint in 6.1 seconds. The Long Range variant is expected to come with a larger 75kWh high-energy lithium-ion battery and a dual-motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) setup. This version produces a combined output of roughly 450 bhp and 490 Nm of torque, achieving 0-100 kmph in just 4.4 seconds. The range for the Long Range model is estimated at 629 km (WLTP), which translates to a realistic Indian driving range of about 500-530 km. Charging capabilities are a major highlight, as the car supports V3 Supercharging. The RWD variant can charge at up to 170kW, while the Long Range variant supports up to 250kW. Using a fast charger, the car can add up to 282 km of range in just 15 minutes. For home charging, an 11kW AC charger is expected to be the standard recommendation, taking about 6 to 8 hours for a full charge.

interior

Inside, the Tesla Model 3 follows a minimalist design language with almost no physical buttons on the dashboard. The cabin is dominated by a 15.4-inch central touchscreen infotainment system that controls everything from the air conditioning and navigation to the glovebox release. The steering wheel is also updated, removing the traditional stalks for indicators and wipers; these functions are now moved to haptic buttons on the steering wheel spokes. For rear passengers, the car is expected to include an 8-inch touchscreen mounted at the back of the center console, allowing them to control climate settings or watch videos. The seats are likely to be upholstered in premium synthetic leather and will offer heating and ventilation functions for the front row. To improve comfort on Indian roads, the car uses acoustic glass on all windows, which significantly reduces external traffic noise. The storage space is practical, with a 594-liter rear boot and an additional 88-liter front trunk (frunk) for smaller bags. The interior lighting is customizable with a wrap-around ambient light strip that runs across the dash and door panels. A 17-speaker premium audio system with dual subwoofers is expected in the higher trims, providing a high-quality sound experience for all occupants.

exterior

The exterior design of the Tesla Model 3 focuses heavily on aerodynamic efficiency to maximize driving range. The car features a very low drag coefficient of 0.219 Cd, which is among the best in its class. The front end is expected to feature the updated "Highland" look, which includes slimmer, sharper LED headlights and a revised bumper that eliminates the fog lamp housings for a cleaner appearance. The side profile remains sleek with flush-fitting door handles that pop out when needed, helping reduce wind resistance. The Indian model is likely to offer 18-inch Photon wheels or 19-inch Nova wheels, both designed to improve airflow. At the rear, the car gets new C-shaped integrated LED tail lamps that are built into the trunk lid for a more seamless look. The car will be available in several color options, including Ultra Red and Stealth Grey. The glass roof is a standard feature, extending from the front to the back to give the car a futuristic look. The ground clearance is expected to be around 140 mm, which is typical for premium sedans but requires careful driving over large speed breakers. The overall body construction uses a mix of aluminum and steel to maintain a low center of gravity while ensuring structural rigidity for better handling on Indian highways.

competition

The Tesla Model 3 will enter a competitive premium electric sedan segment in India. Its most direct rival is the BYD Seal, which is already available in India and offers similar performance and range at a very aggressive price point starting around Rs. 41 lakh. However, the Model 3 is expected to command a premium over the BYD due to its brand value and superior software ecosystem. Another major competitor is the BMW i4, which is priced around Rs. 72 lakh to Rs. 78 lakh. The i4 offers a more traditional luxury interior and a larger 83.9kWh battery, but the Model 3 likely offers better charging infrastructure through the Tesla Supercharger network. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is another potential rival that may arrive in India, sharing its E-GMP platform with the Ioniq 5 and offering ultra-fast 800V charging. Additionally, the Model 3 will face indirect competition from electric SUVs like the Volvo XC40 Recharge and the Kia EV6, which fall in a similar price bracket of Rs. 55 lakh to Rs. 65 lakh. While the SUVs offer more ground clearance, the Model 3 targets buyers looking for better driving dynamics and a more aerodynamic sedan silhouette.
