The Fiat Siena was the sedan derivative of the Palio and formed part of Fiat's global 178 family for emerging markets. In India, the Siena was introduced in 1999 and initially used the same basic platform and mechanical architecture as the Palio.

It was available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, while later versions received a larger 1.6-litre petrol engine. Fiat relaunched a reskinned Siena in India in May 2002, with the updated exterior styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro.

The sedan offered a five-seat cabin, a separate boot and front-wheel drive, making it Fiat's answer to the growing C-segment sedan market.

The Siena name was eventually replaced by the Petra branding in 2004 as Fiat changed its naming strategy for the Palio-based sedan.

Engine and Performance

The Fiat Siena came with both petrol and diesel engine options for buyers in India. One popular choice was the 1.2 litre petrol engine which produced around 72 horsepower. For drivers who wanted more power, the car offered a larger 1.6 litre petrol engine. This bigger engine produced 100 horsepower and gave the car quick performance on open roads. This model also had a 1.7 litre diesel engine variant that made 63 horsepower. The diesel engine was built for people who drove long distances and needed better fuel efficiency. All these engines worked with a 5 speed manual gearbox. The car used a front wheel drive system for its daily operations. These engine parts were quite similar to the ones found in the Palio hatchback. This made it easier for mechanics to fix the car and find necessary spare parts during that time.

interior

The Fiat Siena had a simple and functional cabin designed for 5 passengers. Inside, the car offered good legroom and headroom for everyone. The dashboard used hard plastic materials that were very durable for Indian roads. This model came with basic features like a clear instrument cluster and easy-to-reach controls. The seats were comfortable for long journeys. One major highlight was the large 500-liter boot space, which was perfect for family trips. Higher variants of the car included power windows and air conditioning to keep the cabin cool. The design inside was clean and practical without any fancy parts. It focused more on being strong rather than looking stylish. Many owners liked the Siena for its solid build quality inside. It felt safe and heavy compared to other small sedans of that time.

exterior

The Fiat Siena was a simple four-door sedan sold in the Indian market. It was mostly the sedan version of the Palio hatchback. The car had a classic three-box shape with a clear boot at the back. It measured about 4,100 mm in length and 1,614 mm in width. This model had a very clean and rounded design. The front part had simple headlamps and a small grille with the brand logo. Higher variants came with body-colored bumpers and side mirrors. The wheels were usually 13 or 14 inches in size. It had a ground clearance of 170 mm, which was good for Indian roads. The rear part of the car had large, simple tail lights. This model was built with thick metal sheets for extra strength. It was a basic but solid-looking car for families at that time.

competition

The Fiat Siena faced strong competition from several popular sedans in the Indian market. Its main rival was the Maruti Suzuki Esteem, which had a huge network of service centers. Another major competitor was the Ford Ikon, which many drivers liked for its performance. The Hyundai Accent also competed in the same segment, offering a spacious cabin for families. Other cars like the Opel Corsa and the Mitsubishi Lancer were also available at that time. Most of these rivals were priced between 5 and 7 lakh rupees. While the Fiat Siena was a sturdy car, many buyers preferred the Maruti Suzuki Esteem or the Hyundai Accent because spare parts were easier to find. These competitors had better sales numbers in India during the early 2000s. This model struggled to keep up with the wide reach of its rivals in different cities across the country.
