Volvo has brought back the XC70 badge with a new identity, this time as a plug-in hybrid SUV that combines long electric range with petrol backup. Built on Volvo’s Scalable Modular Architecture, the XC70 is positioned between the XC60 and XC90, offering families a premium option that balances ecofriendly driving with long distance confidence.

At the heart of the XC70 is a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with dual electric motors and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. Buyers can choose between two battery packs. The standard 21.2 kWh LFP battery delivers around 100 km of pure electric driving, while the larger 39.6 kWh NMC battery stretches the range to about 180 km on the CLTC cycle. Combined with the petrol motor, the SUV is capable of covering more than 1,200 km on a single tank and charge. Power output can climb up to 456 hp in top trims, making it one of the most powerful plug-in hybrids in Volvo’s stable.

Charging is equally fast and convenient. Using a DC fast charger, the XC70 can go from zero to 80 percent in just 23 minutes. It also supports bidirectional charging, turning the SUV into a portable power source for outdoor equipment or home devices during emergencies.

Scandinavian Design

The XC70 stays true to Volvo’s clean Scandinavian style. The exterior features a closed grille with active shutters, sleek Thor’s Hammer split LED headlights, and vertical C shaped tail lamps that flow into the rear glass. Flush door handles, gloss black accents, and a panoramic glass roof complete the premium look. Buyers can select alloy wheels ranging from 19 to 21 inches.

Inside, the cabin focuses on space and minimalism. A 15.4 inch landscape oriented touchscreen dominates the dash, supported by a 12.3 inch digital driver display. For those who want even more tech, an optional 92 inch augmented reality head up display projects navigation and safety information onto the windshield.

he XC70 also includes AI powered voice controls, over the air software updates, wireless charging, tri zone climate control, and optional premium sound systems. Wide supportive seats, clever storage solutions, and a bright cabin atmosphere make it practical as well as luxurious.

Measuring 4,815 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,895 mm, the XC70 sits in the same size class as the Mercedes GLC but offers a longer footprint. Kerb weight ranges between 2,110 and 2,275 kg depending on configuration, giving it the solidity Volvo buyers expect.

Volvo continues its legacy of making safety a priority. The XC70 is equipped with the latest Safe Space Technology, combining cameras, radar, and advanced driver assistance. Key features include automatic lane change assist, a park pilot system, and cyclist aware door alerts that warn before opening. These systems work with Volvo’s reinforced chassis and rigid body design to ensure maximum protection for both occupants and pedestrians.

Will XC70 Come To India?

The XC70 will first go on sale in China by late 2025, with European markets expected to follow. An India launch has not been confirmed but given Volvo’s focus on hybrid and electric mobility in the country, it remains a strong possibility. Industry estimates suggest the SUV would likely be priced between ₹55 lakh and ₹65 lakh ex showroom if introduced here.

For Indian families, the XC70 offers a rare mix of practicality and sustainability. Its 100 to 180 km electric range covers most daily commutes emission free, while the petrol engine ensures effortless long-distance driving without charging worries. Add Scandinavian design, luxury comfort, and benchmark safety, and the XC70 becomes one of the most balanced premium SUVs in its class
