The R2 is a fully faired supersport positioned directly above the R15 V4 and below the R3 in Yamaha India's lineup.

It uses a new 204cc liquid-cooled DOHC four-valve single-cylinder engine producing 26.5 PS at 10,000 rpm and 19.1 Nm at 8,000 rpm, paired with a 6-speed gearbox and an assist and slipper clutch.

The engine carries DLC-coated valves, a feature borrowed from the YZF-R1 flagship. It also uses an electronically controlled throttle with ride-by-wire, a mirror-finished DiASil cylinder, and semi-dry-sump lubrication, spec usually associated with more expensive motorcycles.

All variants get dual-channel ABS, switchable traction control, an assist and slipper clutch, and ride-by-wire throttle with Street, Sport, and Rain riding modes. A Custom mode allows individual tuning of throttle response, traction control, and quickshifter settings.
